Where Laws are Made
California has a bicameral legislature, an assembly and a senate. There are 80 assemblymembers and 40 senators. The legislature meets for two-year sessions, beginning in January of every odd year. Typically, the legislature does not meet during autumn months, but legislators continue to hold informational hearings and do business in their districts.
Sierra Club California staff work year-round to track bills, educate legislators and advocate for the environment as bills are introduced and laws are made. Every August, we invite our volunteer activists to participate in a Sierra Club California lobby day in Sacramento. The lobby corps is limited to abut 60 people and sign-up typically begins in May. Check this website for lobby day registration and updates.
